‘Let tertiary students decide what to wear to school’

Friday, October 29, 2010
Call me forward-thinking but the idea of a dress code for polytechnic and university students just doesn’t sit well with me.

This issue, which was first reported by The New Paper, was sparked off by a recent stern warning by Republic Polytechnic to all its students: Dress appropriately or get kicked out of lectures.

The reason for the school’s sudden dresscode clampdown? More and more students were coming to school and attending lessons in increasingly casual wear.

To inform students of the tighter rules, the polytechnic sent out an email that said, “Please note that students are not allowed to enter class if they are found to be improperly attired.”

“Improper attire” consisted of sleeveless T-shirts, singlets, shorts and miniskirts to lessons.

A spokesman from RP explained the school’s policy, “It is imposed to prepare students for the realities of industrial internships during their education at our polytechnic and for working life after they graduate.”
