Honesty is the best policy? Whatever happened to that? True, you may be a graduate, have a good future but dishonesty will bring you to nowhere. I personally think that the student's action has tarnished the image of NTU. She should have known better than to take a taxi if she did not have enough money and I cannot imagine her, having the heart to cheat the cabby.

As what Christabel has written that the student has had the intention to cheat since she prepared the bag, there should be a thorough investigation so that the student would not be let off the hook and pull this trick on other cabbies. The school could check the CCTV and identify the student especially since there is a description of the attire and handbag. I feel that this matter should not be let lying down. This incident also serves as a warning for other cabbies to be extra cautious when dealing with the same trick and the likes.

After reading the article, i feel that the NTU student is an
irresposible person because she promised that she would pay for the fare
while she leave her handbag in the taxi as an assurance. In fact, she
did not turn up and the taxi driver had found out that the handbag was filled with
rubbish and some crushed paper.

I felt that she should be responsible for her doings and not to run away
without paying the fare. It is so disappointing to hear that the taxi driver had been conned
by a NTU student. I like to give my advice to her. If she do not have sufficient money
in her pocket. Even if you are in a rush or late for school, do not take a taxi or even
conned the taxi driver. Everyone works for a living. Imagine if you are a taxi driver who had
been conned. It definitely would'nt feel nice.

Therefore, i hope that in future this lady would realise her
mistake and be responsible for her actions. Do not repeat the same actions again. Think of the
consequences if one day you are being caught red handed.

RE: NTU student uses empty bag ruse to cheat cabby of $23 taxi fare

Monday, January 24, 2011
After reading the article, I think that it is very wrong for the NTU student to behave this way. Firstly, this is also called theft. The taxi driver drove you to where you want to go and the NTU student didnt even pay a single dollar.

Besides, I think that this NTU student already has the intention to not to pay the taxi fare as she already had her bag filled with rubbish and crushed paper.

I think that this incident will alert all taxi-drivers to be catious of such passengers. This might make the taxi drivers not to trust their passengers to withdraw money after reaching the destination.

To which, I think I'll be at a disadvantage. I've acutally done this twice. I actually took a cab home and didnt have enough money. I was gracious enough to leave my shopping bags with this taxi drivers and went home to take some money out to pay the drivers. I guess that after this incident, many drivers will not trust the passengers anymore.

To conclude, I think that you should check your wallet to check whether is this enough for the taxi fare. Never have the thought of leaving your bags with the taxi driver and pretend to go and withdraw money for your fare. No matter how late you are, never take a taxi if you cannot afford.

Christabel.

After reading the article i think it is a irresponsible action. Furthermore she is an NTU student even though she doesn't have enough money to pay for the taxi far she should have thought of a more appropriate approached in handling such a situation. I felt ashamed and disgrace for our country, Singapore. This is because our country's education system is excellent with many people excel in their studies. However, many of this graduates only have the IQ but they are lacking of EQ therefore they will have such a behavior.

Singapore should raise the students etiquette and must be gracious. If you are unable to pay for taxi fare, you should ask your friends whom are in school to pay on behalf of you. This is better than leaving a empty bag with rubbish inside as an asset to prove that you will come back to pay.

Hence in conclusion, I think that everyone should be responsible for their actions. Learn to be gracious.

NTU student uses empty bag ruse to cheat cabby of $23 taxi fare

Sunday, January 23, 2011
After reading this article, I felt sad yet at the same time angry, to see this type of incident happening in Singapore. From the earlier slashing incidents, the Singaporean student who is arrested in UK for child pornography, to this cheating of cabby incident, it probably shows people that there are flaws in Singapore’s education system.
Singapore education system is based on meritocracy, where individuals are rewarded based on ability and hard work. This is actually a good thing, as this would allow students to strive for excellence in their academic areas. However due to this system, schools would focus more on the academic side of students, neglecting morale education. Therefore this is probably why the students had forgotten the basic values in life. However it is not fair to blame the education system of Singapore, it still boils down to each individual. If an individual is responsible for their actions, incident like this would not occur.
Hence, I felt that the NTU student should have thought of the consequence first. She should know that her selfish actions would affect others.  Like in this incident, she should not have sat the cab when she did not have the money to pay for it, because cabby drivers do not earn much income, and yet they have to support and feed their family. What she had done was totally wrong, it had shown others how selfish her character was. Furthermore through this incident, she had tarnished the good image of NTU which is a well respected university.
Therefore in conclusion, I feel that individuals should be responsible for their own actions. They should think of others first before themselves, and they should know when to do the right thing and when not to. Lastly, if possible, the government can also implement civics and morale education in schools. Thereby with this, I hope that individuals would develop a good character and is able to think for others beside oneself.

NTU student uses empty bag ruse to cheat cabby of $23 taxi fare

Friday, January 21, 2011

A cabby is disheartened after encountering a passenger who disappeared without paying the fare for her trip from Sengkang to NTU. She left her bag in the taxi as a pledge that she would return with money but never did.

When the cabbie felt that something was amiss, he checked her bag and found only rubbish and crushed paper inside.

It was then that he realised he had been duped by an irresponsible passenger.

When STOMPer Al, the cabby's son heard of the incident, he was filled with anger and disbelief.

Al says:

"I would like to relate an incident which happened to my father. He was cheated by a cab-fare con, who is an NTU student.

"On Monday, January 17, at 9:59am (as indicated on fare receipt), my father picked up a passenger from the Compass Point taxi stand in Sengkang. The passenger was a young Chinese girl dressed in white top and skirt and she was carrying a light grey handbag.

"Her destination was NTU.

"This lady passenger told my father to speed up as she was running late for her morning class.

"Upon arrival, (at 10:38am as printed on receipt) at NTU on Nanyang Drive, this lady passenger informed my father that she had insufficient cash for the taxi fare (which came up to $23) and assured my father that she will return with the money in a while.

"She then said that she would leave her handbag in the taxi as an assurance.

"My father waited for a full 15 minutes but this lady passenger did not reappear. At that instant, my father realised that he had obviously been conned by this passenger.

"As such, he decided to check the handbag which the lady passenger left at the backseat, only to find trash and crushed papers stuff inside it.

"Sad to say, my father has been a victim by a cheater and the most appalling thing is that this cheater is student of NTU, a tertiary institution that is well ranked globally.

"This is a very dishonest incident, which makes me feel very disheartened and filled with outrage.

"I am ashamed to be associated with my alma mater".
